What does a Heavy Equipment Technician do?
H.E.T’s maintain, repair and overhaul all parts and systems on heavy equipment (heavy duty diesel engines, drive-train systems, hydraulic systems, hydraulic and air breaking systems, and electrical and electronic systems.
- They keep equipment clean, lubricated and maintained.
- They diagnose faults or malfunctions
- They adjust equipment and repair or replace defective parts.
- They test repaired equipment for proper performance.
- They write service reports
There are four types of Heavy Equipment Technicians: Transport Trailer Mechanics, Truck and Transport Mechanic, Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic, and Heavy Equipment Technicians.

How do I become a Heavy Equipment Technician?
1. Find a company willing to take you as an apprentice
2. Register with AAIT (Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training)
3. Apprentice for 4 years, which includes 1500 hours of on the job training and 8 weeks of technical training at school each year.
4. Take the interprovincial Red Seal exam to become a registered H.E.T.
5. Now you can work almost anywhere in Canada!
Where does a Heavy Equipment Technician work?
H.E.T’s are most often employed by specialized repair shops and organizations that own or lease heavy equipment used in the construction, mining, forestry, landscaping, agriculture and transportation industries.
How much does a Heavy Equipment Technician make?

Apprentice Heavy Equipment Technician earn 60% of a journeyman’s wage rate in the first year, 70% in the second, 80% in the third and 90% in the fourth year.
